With the recent release of the 224 Valkyrie from Federal Premium Ammunition, we wanted to know more about why the cartridge was developed. In this RECOILweb video, Jim Gilliland gives us a rundown of how this round is essentially the perfect marriage of the 6.5 Creemoor and the .223 Remington cartridges. The 224 Valkyrie has a 6.8 SPC parent case, which is shouldered to 30 degrees and necked down to .22 caliber. The 90gr Sierra Matchking projectile has a G1 ballistic coefficient of .563. Gilliland reports getting a muzzle velocity of 2668fps with a JP Enterprises rifle, that has a 20 inch barrel. Gilliland stated, “I have consistently made hits out to 1300 yards with this round.” Left: 6.5 Creedmoor, Center: 224 Valkyrie, Right: .223 Remington Federal Premium will be offering the cartridge in four options, tailoring to all types of shooting: Long range and competition, The Gold Medal Sierra Matchking 224 Valkyrie Varmint and predator hunting, The Nosler Ballistic Tip Varmint 224 Valkyrie Medium game hunting, The Fusion MSR 224 Valkyrie Target shooting, The American Eagle TMJ 224 Valkyrie Boxes of 224 Valkyrie are expected to hit retailers in January 2018.
