Welcome to RECOILweb’s newest column, Veteran Vices. In this series, we will be highlighting Veteran-owned companies that produce all of our favorite vices – beer, BBQ, whiskey, coffee, cigars and anything related to eating, smoking or drinking. Unlike the Justice Department, we believe Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms should all be part of a complete and balanced lifestyle. Salt and pepper will always have a place in the spice rack. But sometimes a meal just needs an extra kick of flavor and freedom. That’s where Grill Your Ass Off comes in. Founded by a former Army infantryman, GYAO has produced a line of seasonings that are not only flavorful and versatile but are, in the founder’s words, “branded for the veteran and 2A lifestyle”. While stationed in Virginia, Jason Murff found himself as the only soldier in his platoon from Texas and thus the resident expert on quality barbecue. After scouring the PX and some local stores for quality seasoning with which to feed his brothers in arms, he decided to start blending his own to get as close as he could to that Lone Star taste. Jason later separated from service and went back to college, where he decided to take some of those flavor profiles developed during his grunt days and bring them to the masses. His product line includes a number of blends for whatever you throw on the grill, including Willie Pete chicken seasoning, Claymore Cajun, Infindel pork rub, Crispy’s Mango Habanero and several others. Of course, they’re quick to remind us that all the Grill Your Ass Off Spices are highly adaptable and a bottle labeled “steak seasoning” should not be considered exclusive to red meat. We’ve come to love using Willie Pete in scrambled eggs. Claymore Cajun has worked well for seafood (although they now make Napalm, for shrimp and crawfish) and we may or may not be experimenting with some of their spices on wild game meats for future projects. In addition to seasoning, they also sell beef jerky, apparel, and some other odds and ends like a fridge magnet that gives you all of the proper cooking temperatures for various kinds of meat. There is also a section on their website cataloging recipes using the different GYAO flavors. For those veterans looking for a small taste of nostalgia, or any freedom-loving backyard chef who wants a bold kick of made-in-the-USA flavor for their next pool party, give Grill Your Ass Off a look. We’re willing to bet they have something that makes your mouth water. Find Grill Your Ass Off online at https://grillyourassoff.com/.
