Written by Jacki Billings CMMG continues adding to its arsenal of rifles, this time ponying up a new Mk4 DTR2 rifle chambered in Federal Premium’s newest cartridge — the .224 Valkyrie. Introduced in late 2017, the Valkyrie cartridge is poised to take the precision world by storm offering long range performance similar to that of the 6.5 Creedmoor. Unlike the Creedmoor cartridge, though, the Valkyrie is a smaller, AR-15 sized caliber. Federal Premium has said the flat-shooting Valkyrie was crafted to generate supersonic velocities out to 1,300 yards. CMMG seems to be capitalizing on this, introducing the Mk4 DTR2 ready to tackle the Valkyrie cartridge. “With the added benefits of minimal recoil and an affordable price point, 224 Valkyrie has the potential to be the go-to cartridge of long-range shooters for years to come,” CMMG said. “Recognizing this potential, CMMG’s engineers quickly went to work developing a rifle that would maximize the effectiveness of the 224 Valkyrie and meet the needs of long-range shooters straight out of the box.” CMMG dumps what it calls “fundamental features” into the 9-pound Mk4 DTR2 to satisfy long-range shooters. Of these the company includes a CMMG Ambi Charging Handle, Magpul MOE Pistol Grip, Giessele SSA 2-Stage Trigger, and CMMG SV Brake along with some M-LOK on the RML 14 handguard. Resting comfortably inside the forged aluminum upper is a 24-inch medium taper barrel with 1:7 twist and 1/2×28 threads to accommodate that SV Brake. Paired with an aluminum lower, CMMG says the 44.5-inch rifle construction delivers durability out in the field. Recognizing the shooter’s need to accessorize, CMMG is offering the Mk4 DTR2 in five Cerakote colors with catchy names — Burnt Bronze, Midnight Bronze, Sniper Grey, Titanium, and Flat Dark Earth. The Mk4 DTR2 in .224 Valkyrie is priced at $1,699 and CMMG takes it a step further allowing shooters to piece out parts. The company divvies up the upper group ($899), lower group ($749), bolt carrier group ($179), and barrel ($259). The Valkyrie rifle will have its debut for the first time at SHOT Show in Las Vegas.
