The Ruger MkIV pistols were released to much fanfare, largely because the field stripping was greatly simplified compared to its predecessors. But all is not well, as there is now a major safety recall that applies to every Ruger MkIV produced before June 1, 2017. Ruger recently discovered that all Mark IV™ pistols (including 22/45™ models) manufactured prior to June 1, 2017 have the potential to discharge unintentionally if the safety is not utilized correctly. In particular, if the trigger is pulled while the safety lever is midway between the “safe” and “fire” positions (that is, the safety is not fully engaged or fully disengaged), then the pistol may not fire when the trigger is pulled. So what do you do? Here is a breakdown from Ruger 1. Don’t shoot the gun 2. Register for the recall online 3. We’ll send you a prepaid USPS flat rate box (when we are ready – so we don’t get too many in at once) 4. Send the lower only to Ruger via USPS 5. We’ll turn it around in a week. 6. You’ll get a free magazine If you have aftermarket parts installed in the gun such as Volquartsen triggers or the like, Ruger says to simply take them out before sending in the lower. There's no need to re-install the old parts, but you should include them in the box. When you get your lower back, it will come with factory parts installed.
