Learn More Written by Jacki Billings Salomon turns out an updated version of its XA Forces Mid GTX shoe, tweaking the design to focus on increased durability. Based on the XA Pro Mid (which was originally designed for military use), the new and improved XA Forces Mid GTX concentrates its efforts on providing a stronger shoe, Salomon says. Though the overall look largely remains the same, small improvements have been along the way. The new boot will use material found on the Quest 4D Boot series. The fabric delivers four times more durability when it comes to tear-strength than previously used materials, according to lab and deployment tests conducted by Salomon. Lending to a tougher design, the shoe now features a single layer construction with double and triple stitch reinforcing the material. The outsole has also be re-engineered to increase overall ruggedness. Salomon introduces a new layer into the sole to create more thickness in addition to more rubber for better contact with surfaces. The XA Forces Mid GTX also sports a rubber pad on the medial side for increased protection while a break in the heel better supports climbing, the company says. Saloman finishes off the internal and external improvements with a roomier toe box, adding more toe space than previous versions. The XA Forces Mid GTX will come in two flavors — GORE-TEX and non-GORE-TEX. The GORE-TEX variant supplies more color options (black, coyote brown, and ranger green) while the non-GORE-TEX model applies its focus to a more breathable material. (But don’t worry you can still choose from either black or coyote brown.) Soon to be available in unisex models with half sizes from U.S. 4.5 to 14.5, Saloman says the new boots should be up for grabs online or from Salomon Forces retailers later this month.
