Learn More We continue our post-event coverage of Summit In The Sand with a recap of Day 2. After a successful (and long!) first day of training, students returned bright and early for a pistol/carbine action match. But this isn’t your local club match. Stages were specifically designed by the range staff at CowTown with direct input from all four instructors. The goal was not just to let students get bonus trigger time but also force them to apply all of their lessons from training under the pressure of time and competitive scoring. Each stage utilized a composite scoring system of both hits on target and skill points. The skill points, depending on the stage, could be assigned for proper application of medical equipment and principles, sensory awareness, successful projecting a track based on footprint indicators, or effective use of unconventional shooting positions to acquire and engage targets at distance. Students were given not only the same MCX VIRTUS carbines and Tango 6 Optics from the day prior, but were also allowed to utilize SIG’s P320 X Five competition pistol. Blue Force Gear slings were available for the carbines and Microtech knives made their return for use against several close-quarters targets where students were forced to escape restraints and fight their way to a handgun and then a carbine. In addition to the four primary stages, there was also a bonus stage for those willing to contribute to the cash pot at stake. CowTown’s highly challenging shoot house was set up in a short stage requiring competitors to clear multiple rooms and hallways by themselves, under time, while still effectively discriminating between shoot and no-shoot targets. A final class fun shoot took place while competition scores were tallied and prizes assigned. All firearms from both days were made available and students had access to both SIG and Federal ammunition to run through the various weapons, including a couple of sneak-peek weapons that RECOIL is currently evaluating for future articles.
