Issue 54 Veteran Vices: AsLegacy 97 Tom Marshall Join the Conversation At RECOIL, we review every product fairly and without bias. Making a purchase through one of our links may earn us a small commission, and helps support independent gun reviews. Learn More One of the reasons we love running the Veteran Vices column is that we’re suckers for a good story. Every Vices brand is a direct reflection of a military or first-responder veteran spending their blood, sweat, and tears to bring something good to a world that seems to be falling apart faster every year. For Dasine Asberry, the story starts with his high school sweetheart. After graduation, Dasine went on to spend six years in the U.S. Army as a Cavalry Scout, serving in 1st Battalion, 30th Infantry Regiment. He deployed to Operation: Iraqi Freedom, Operation: Enduring Freedom, and Operation: New Dawn. His post-military career included continued service to the U.S. government as an independent contractor providing security support to Americans serving in high-threat posts overseas. Says Dasine: “Over the years, inevitable sacrifices such as separations from deployments, training, and living miles apart has allowed us to make each time special when we finally reunited. Once I came home there was always a ‘get-together’ to celebrate my safe return home. That became our way of creating meaningful family traditions that will last a lifetime. The brand was created not only to establish our family’s legacy, but to also allow us to keep celebrating life and family.” This led to the formation of AsLegacy Spirits. We had the opportunity to sample their AsLegacy Vodka 97, which separates itself from the pack by being a six-times-distilled grape-based vodka. This stands in contrast to many other popular vodkas, which are typically distilled from grain. AsLegacy 97 has an intensely rich fruity nose that finishes smoothly without the jet fuel sensation of many other clear spirits. AsLegacy, like most Veteran Vices alumni, hasn’t forgotten their military roots, and they continue to give back through regular donations to the Yellow Ribbon program. They launched in New Jersey in 2018, and, by the time you read this, they’ll be in Florida and hopefully the Army/Air Force Exchange network. Their goal is five new states and nationwide shipping by the end of the year. So keep your eye out for AsLegacy Spirits in your area and sip your favorite martini with a dash of Veteran Vices flair — shaken, not stirred of course.
